Living & preserved marine organisms

The provision of marine biological resources for research purposes is at the core of the EMBRC-BE services. Those include:

  • Culture collections: bacteria and (BCCM/LMG) and diatom (BCCM/DCG) collections; seaweed and invertebrate cultures
  • Preserved samples: Historical samples and reference collections
  • Organisms collected in the wild
  • Taxonomic services

Organisms, cultures, strains, specific cell lines and their DNA are available on-site or remotely; proper conditions are respected for shipment (e.g. use of dry ice). Taxonomic identification is offered through specialised services and professional taxonomists.

Conformity with regulations

EMBRC-BE guarantees conformity with national and international regulations concerning collection, maintenance/cultivation and shipping of biological resources. Ethical standards and nature conservation requirements limit the availability and/or types of research on certain species such as mammals and those on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Strict adherence to ethical standards and 3R policies (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) is ensured.
